The Carthage College women's tennis team (12-10, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Wheaton College (Ill., 17-4), 8-1, on Saturday, May 8 in the championship match of the CCIW Women's Tennis Automatic Qualifying Tournament at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
With the win, the Thunder received the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship. Second-seeded Carthage defeated third-seeded North Central College (12-6, 3-3), 6-3, in a Friday May 7 semifinal match, with top-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 16-4, 6-0) shutting out fourth-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 14-14, 2-4), 9-0, in the other semifinal contest
Carthage's Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 14-12) defeated North Central College's Cory Schillerstrom, 6-1, 6-2, at number-one singles. Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 19-7) defeated the Cardinals' Alicia DeGrado, 6-2, 6-1, at number-two singles. Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 15-9) was a winner at number-three singles, as was Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 15-8) at number-four singles. Amanda Bizub (So., Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead, 9-7) lost at number-five singles, as did Alex Maniscalo (Jr., Lemont, Ill., 1-9) at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Klein and McPeek (18-8) was a winner over North Central, as was the Lady Reds' number-two team of Naidicz and Morgan (5-5). Carthage's number-three tandem of Bizub and Kaitlyn Farrell (Jr., Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township, 1-9) lost to the Cardinals.
