The Carthage College men's tennis team (15-8, 5-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) won the CCIW Men's Tennis Championship on Saturday, May 8 by blanking Wheaton College (Ill., 10-8), 9-0, at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. The conference title is the eighth overall for the Red Men and their seventh in a row. Since the CCIW does not have an automatic qualifier, Carthage now awaits a Monday, May 10 announcement from the NCAA regarding the field for the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship.

The CCIW championship got underway on Friday, May 7 with fourth-seeded North Central College (7-13, 2-3) defeating fifth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (14-8, 2-3), 5-3, and third-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 21-10, 3-2) blanking sixth-seeded Elmhurst College (5-14, 0-5), 6-0. Top-seeded Carthage defeated North Central (Ill., 7-14), 5-1, in a semifinal match, with second-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 10-7, 3-2) edging Augustana (Ill., 21-11), 5-4, in the other semifinal contest. Illinois Wesleyan (15-8) edged Elmhurst (5-15), 5-4, in the fifth-place match on Saturday, May 8, and Augustana (Ill., 22-11) edged North Central (Ill., 7-15), 5-4, in the May 8 third-place match.

In the semifinals, Carthage's Jack Schiro (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., 16-4) defeated North Central College's Sam Sweeney, 6-3, 7-5, at number one singles, while Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 21-8) did not complete his match with the Cardinals' Matt Boguslawski at number-two singles. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 18-11) was a winner at number-three singles, as was Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 18-7) at number-four singles and J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 16-9) at number-five singles. Alex McLean (So., Belleville, Ill./West, 12-11) lost at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Lotz (11-7) and the Red Men's number-two team of Schiro and Schwenke (7-8) did not complete their matches, while Carthage's number-three team of Delk and Whiteside (13-6) was a winner over North Central.

In the finals, Carthage's Jack Schiro (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., 17-4) defeated Wheaton's Taylor Johnson, 6-2, 6-4, at number one singles, while Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 22-8) won over Jordan Williams, 6-1, 6-2, at number-two singles. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 19-11) was a winner at number-three singles, as was Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 19-7) at number-four singles, J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 17-9) at number-five singles and Chris Vargo (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill./York, 6-4) at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Lotz (12-7) was a winner over the Thunder, as was the Red Men's number-two team of Schiro and Schwenke (8-8) and Carthage's number-three team of Delk and Whiteside (14-6).
