The Carthage College softball team (21-8, 9-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the April 21 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional poll, swept a Tuesday, April 27 doubleheader from non-conference opponent Ripon College (14-15), 5-0 and 8-2, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.

In the opening game, Stephanie Noel blasted a solo home run the first inning, her sixth of the year, to give Carthage a quick, 1-0 lead. Ripon loaded the bases off pitcher Kelsey Epping with two outs in the second on a hit batter and two walks, but Epping got Ashley Kirst on a soft liner to third to end the threat. A two-run single by Meghan Roman in the second gave the Lady Reds a 3-0 lead. Stephanie Hueramo's two-run double in the sixth made it 5-0. Kelsey Epping (13-2) twirled a one-hitter with four walks and 16 strikeouts. Alli Jensen led off the sixth with a single to left, the only hit off Epping. Brittnee Peotter (9-11) took the loss. Stephanie Noel went two-for-three with a double and the solo homer.

In the nightcap, the Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Alli Jensen. The Lady Reds tied the game in the bottom half when Stephanie Noel tripled and subsequently scored on an errant throw from the catcher back to the pitcher. Carthage took a 4-1 lead in the second. Tricia O'Keefe hit an RBI-double. A squeeze-play bunt by Meghan Roman scored Melissa Vitale from third, and an infield single by Ariel Yeager scored O'Keefe. Carthage went up, 5-1, in the third on an RBI-single by Katie Paulmeyer. Stephanie Noel's RBI-double in the fourth and a Katie Paulmeyer sacrifice fly upped Carthage's lead to 7-1. Alyssa Schrader scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 8-1 before the Red Hawks managed a run in the seventh for the final, 8-2 margin. Krystina Leazer (8-2) was the winning pitcher in the second game. She allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out six batters. Stephanie Rieuwpassa (5-3) took the loss. Stephanie Noel went three-for-three with an RBI. Ariel Yeager and Tricia O'Keefe each had two hits and an RBI.

Carthage travels to Decatur, Ill., on Thursday, April 29 to play CCIW-opponent Millikin University (21-15, 4-8 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. twinbill at Rotary Park. A split for Carthage would clinch at least a share of the CCIW title with North Central College, while a sweep would give the Lady Reds an outright championship.
