The Carthage College softball team (19-8, 9-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the April 21 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional poll, swept a Monday, April 26 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (21-15, 7-7 CCIW), 2-1 and 3-1, at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis. The sweep kept the Lady Reds in first place in the CCIW, just ahead of North Central College at 8-4.
In the opening game, Carthage broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on an RBI-double by Stephanie Noel. Elmhurst tied the game, 1-1, in the sixth when Becca Zumpf led off with a double, advanced to third on bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Bowlin. The Lady Reds scored the game-winning run in the sixth. Alyssa Schrader led off with a single up the middle. Pinch-runner Caris Alan took second base on a fielder's choice and scored on a single to center by Jacquelyn Tassone. Carthage pitcher Kelsey Epping (12-2) limited the Bluejays to one runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out six batters. Stephanie Iori (13-7) took the loss. Jacquelyn Tassone went three-for-three for the Lady Reds.
Tassone broke a scoreless tie in the second game with a two-run homer to centerfield in the sixth. The Lady Reds made it a 3-0 game in the seventh on an RBI-double by Heather Johnson. Elmhurst got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by Becca Zumpf. Carthage hurler Krystina Leazer (7-2) stopped Elmhurst on one run and eight hits, while walking none and striking out five. Stephanie Iori (13-8) took the loss in the second game, as well. Jenny Burke went three-for-three for the Lady Reds, while Heather Johnson went three-for-four with an RBI. Carthage plays host to Ripon College in a Tuesday, April 27 doubleheader, also at the Carthage Softball Field, beginning at 3 p.m.
