The Carthage College softball team (17-8, 7-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked fifth in the April 21 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional poll, swept a Thursday, April 22 doubleheader from non-conference opponent Carroll University (11-18), 5-0 and 5-1, at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.

In the opening game, Carthage pitcher Kelsey Epping (11-2) twirled her second career no-hitter, the first coming on April 2, 2007 against North Park University. Against Carroll (Wis.), Epping faced just 22 batters, one over the minimum, and surrendered only a base on balls to Maggie Shaffer in the first inning. Epping retired the next 19 batters in row, striking out 16 of the 19. She matched her career high of 17 strikeouts set against Illinois Wesleyan University on April 13. Carthage's Jenny Burke hit a three-run homer in the fourth. Alyssa Schrader hit an RBI-single in the sixth, and Stephanie Noel homered in the seventh, her fourth home run in three games. Noel went three-for-three. The loss went to Kelly Lorin (2-2).

In the nightcap, Carthage pitcher Krystina Leazer (6-2) limited the Pioneers to one unearned run on five hits and no walks over seven innings, while striking out six. The Lady Reds scored all five runs in the fifth inning. The first two runs scored on an error by Carroll rightfielder Emily Buettner. Alyssa Schrader followed with an RBI-single, and Amy Slattery drove home two more runs with a single. The Pioneers scored an unearned run in the first inning. The loss went to Christine Roggemann (6-8). Kari Peterson had two hits in three trips for Carthage.

On Saturday, April 24, the Lady Reds entertain non-conference foe the University of Chicago (20-9-1) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Carthage Softball Field. The Maroons are ranked eighth in the current regional poll.
