The Carthage College softball team (11-6, 3-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a Sunday, April 11 doubleheader from CCIW-opponent North Park University (12-8, 0-2), 3-1 and 5-1, at the Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago.
In the first game, Carthage pitcher Kelsey Epping (8-1) limited the Vikings to one run on six hits and four walks over seven innings. Carthage broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth inning. With two outs, Kari Peterson reached on an infield error and scored on a single by Alyssa Schrader. After North Park tied the game in the bottom half, the Lady Reds took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a solo home run by Stephanie Noel. Carthage scored its final run in the seventh on a solo homer by Schrader, who went two-for-three with two RBI.
In the nightcap, Carthage hurdler Krystina Leazer (3-1) stopped North Park on one run and two hits. After the two teams traded runs in the first inning, the Lady Reds broke the game open with a four-run third frame. Stephanie Noel hit an RBI-double, Kari Peterson a two-run double, and Alyssa Schrader singled in the fourth run of the inning. Peterson went two-for-three with three RBI. Vikings pitcher Kate Seebacher (8-5) took the loss in both games. Carthage travels to Bloomington, Ill., on Tuesday, April 13 to play defending-CCIW-champion Illinois Wesleyan University in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at the Illinois Wesleyan Softball Field.
