The Carthage College softball team (1-3, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) opened its 2010 season on Sunday, March 7 with a pair of losses to Northern Athletics Conference opponents at the Florida “Rebel Games” in Kissimmee, Fla. The Lady Reds lost to Benedictine University (Ill., 1-0), 6-5, before falling to Aurora University (2-1) by a 6-2 margin.
On Monday, March 8, Carthage blanked Waldorf College (1-3), 3-0, before losing to Misericordia University (2-2) by a 9-4 margin. Third baseman Katie Paulmeyer (Fr., Alsip, Ill./Chicago-Marist) homered in her first collegiate at bat in the Waldorf game. Shortstop Kari Peterson (Jr., Blooming Prairie, Minn.), who homered twice on Sunday, added an RBI double in the sixth. Pitcher Kelsey Epping (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley, 1-0) allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out five batters. In the loss to Misericordia, pitcher Alyssa Schrader (So., Plainfield, Ill./South, 0-2) was knocked out early after allowing two runs in the first and four in the second. “I stated a little long with Alyssa,” admitted Carthage coach Amy Gillmore, “and it cost us. Kelsey Epping pitched a great game against Waldorf, though, and what a nice way for Katie Paulmeyer to start her Carthage career.”
On Wednesday, March 10, the Lady Reds take on Bluffton University at 9 a.m. and the Catholic University of America at 1 p.m. On Thursday, March 11, Carthage plays Aurora at 9 a.m. and Marietta College at 1 p.m. The trip concludes on Friday, March 12 with games against Simpson College at 9 a.m. and Wittenberg University at 11 a.m.
