The Carthage College softball team (7-4, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) swept a doubleheader from Lake Forest College (8-6), 6-1 and 8-7, on Saturday, March 27 at the Carthage Softball Field in Kenosha, Wis.
In the first game, Carthage pitcher Kelsey Epping (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley) ran her record to 5-0. Epping upped her streak of unscored-upon innings to 39.0 before the Foresters plated a run off her in the seventh inning. She allowed one run on one hit, while walking eight batters and striking out 13. The Lady Reds scored two runs in the first on an RBI-single by Heather Johnson and an unearned run. Jacquelyn Tassone's two-run double in the third inning made it 4-0, and Alyssa Schrader's two-run triple in the fourth made it a 6-0 game, Heather Johnson went three-for-four with an RBI.
In the nightcap, Carthage jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. Stephanie Noel and Kari Peterson drove in runs in the first inning. Stephanie Schafer doubled in a run in the second, and the Lady Reds scored two more unearned runs in the frame. Jacquelyn Tassone hit a solo home run in the third, and Schafer connected on a solo blast in the fourth. Lake Forest came back with two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to tie the game, 7-7, off starting pitcher Krystina Leazer. The Lady Reds scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Heather Johnson. Pitcher Kelsey Epping (6-0) worked the final inning and two-thirds to collected the win. Stephanie Schafer and Heather Johnson each went two-for-three with two RBI.
Carthage plays host to Hope College on Tuesday, March 30 in a 3 p.m. doubleheader, also at the Carthage Softball Field.
