The Carthage College men's lacrosse team (2-0, 1-0 Midwest Lacrosse Conference) defeated Hendrix College (0-1), 8-3, on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, Mo. The Hendrix game was originally scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 21 in Conway, Ark., but was postponed due to lightning.
Carthage had 46 shots against Hendrix, but Warriors goalie Keith Clemens kept the game competitive with a 20-save performance. The Red Men were still able to build a 7-1 lead with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter. Peter Slefinger (Fr., Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) led the way with four goals and two assists. Owen Foley (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) added two assists. Carthage held the Warriors scoreless from midway through the first quarter, when Hendrix scored their first goal at the 7:09 mark, to midway through the fourth quarter. The defense was lead by Chris Czekaj (So., Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech), who had a school-record nine takeaways, three ground balls and a transition goal that was the first score of the afternoon. Goalie Dan Hurst (So., Columbia, Mo./Hickman) got his second win of the season.
Carthage returns to the same location on Friday, March 5 to play Southwestern University (0-3) in a 7 p.m. game.
