The Carthage College men's tennis team (4-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday Feb. 27 for a pair of indoor matches at Coe College's Clark Racquet Center. The Red Men lost to the host-Kohawks, 7-2, in the morning before defeating the University of Dubuque (6-4) by an 8-1 margin.
In the Red Men's loss to Coe, Sammy Ramoni (Sr., Honiara, Solomon Islands, 9-1) won his number-one singles match over Elliot Rausa, 6-4, 7-5, while Jack Schiro (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., 1-0) was a winner at number-two singles over Greg Janssen, 3-6, 7-6, 10-6. Jeffery Lotz Jr. (Fr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 5-2) was a loser at number-three singles, as was Matt Whiteside (So., Sacramento, Calif., Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 2-3) at number-four singles, J.T. Delk (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./North, 2-3) at number-five singles and Chris Vargo (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill./York, 3-2) at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Schiro (2-1) lost to Coe, as did the number-two team of Lotz and Delk (2-1) and the number-three tandem if Vargo and Andy Schwenke (Sr., Mukwonago, Wis., 3-2).
In the win over Dubuque, Ramoni (10-1) defeated Cory McCarthy, 6-3, 6-3, at number-one singles. Lotz (6-2) was a winner at number-two singles, as was Whiteside (3-3) at number-three singles, Vargo (4-2) at number-four singles, Alex McLean (So., Belleville, Ill./West, 3-1) at number-five singles and Schwenke (3-1) at number-six singles. Carthage's number-one doubles team of Ramoni and Schiro (2-2) lost, while the Red Men's number-two team of Lotz and Delk (3-1) and their number-three team of Whiteside and McLean (1-0) were both winners.
Carthage travels to Orlando, Fla., for a four-match spring trip between Sunday, March 7 and Thursday, March 11. On Sunday, March 7, Carthage plays Aquinas College (all times EST) at 5 p.m. On Monday, March 8, the Red Men take on the College of New Jersey at Noon, followed by a Tuesday, March 9 match versus King's College (Pa.) at Noon and a Thursday, March 11 contest against Vassar College at 11:30 a.m.
