The Carthage College women's basketball team (21-3, 11-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 10th in the Feb. 16 “D3hoops.com” poll, 12th in the Feb. 16 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and second in the Feb. 10 NCAA Division III Central Regional poll, closed out its regular-season home schedule on Tuesday, Feb. 16 with an 86-39 win over CCIW-opponent North Park University (5-19, 2-11 CCIW) at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
With the win, Carthage became the first women's team in school history to win 21 games, as coach Cathy Lirgg's 1982 squad went 20-11. The Lady Reds also extended their current winning streak to 10 games, which matches a school record set by the 2007-08 team. Second-place Carthage remains one game behind first-place Illinois Wesleyan University (23-1, 12-1 CCIW) in the CCIW standings. The Titans were a 79-40 winner at Augustana College (Ill.) on Tuesday.
Carthage took the lead, to stay, at 17:07 first half. The lead quickly went to 15 points, 23-8, at 9:43. Carthage went up by 28 points, 40-12, at 2:28, and the Lady Reds led by 26 points at halftime, 42-16. North Park managed to shoot only 23 percent in the first period (6-26). The second half was more of the same, as Carthage built a 40-point lead, 67-27, at 10:13. The Lady Reds led by as much as 48 points, 85-37, at 1:37 en route to a 47-point decision, 86-39.
Carthage shot 57 percent (34-60), while North Park managed just 33 percent (16-49). The Lady Reds out-rebounded the Vikings, 38-28. Four Carthage players scored in double figures. Rosie Dorn (Sr., Chicago, Ill./Wilmette-Regina Dominican) led the way with 17 points on six-of-10 field goals and four-of-six free throws, while Heather Gilmore (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill-Southeast Polk) scored 16 points. Allison Groessl (So., Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) came off the bench to score 12 points, and Diana Jacklin (So., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. North Park's Kam Acree scored a game-high 20 points on nine-of-20 field goals, along with five rebounds and three assists.
Carthage travels to Decatur, Ill., on Saturday, Feb. 20 to close out its regular-season schedule with a 2 p.m. game versus conference-opponent Millikin University (15-9, 9-4 CCIW) at Griswold Center.
