The Carthage College women's basketball team (12-3, 2-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 10th in the Jan. 12 Women's Basketball Coaches Association/
USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll and 12th in the Jan. 12 “D3hoops.com” poll, defeated CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 6-9, 1-3 CCIW), 78-71,on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Carver Physical Education Center in Rock Island, Ill.
Carthage jumped out to an 11-point lead, 23-12, at 12:09 and led by 13 points, 27-14, at 9:43. Augustana pulled to within five points, 27-22, at 7:11, before the Lady Reds went back up by 10, 34-24, at 3:38. That lead didn't last long, as the Vikings closed out the half with an 11-2 run to close the gap to two points at halftime, 37-35. Augustana scored six unanswered points to open the second half, taking a 41-37 lead at 18:22. Carthage went back up to stay, 44-43, at 16:37 and eased out to a 12-point lead, 62-50, at 7:59. The lead went to 14 points, 67-53, at 6:18, and the Lady Reds went on to win by seven, 78-71.
Carthage shot 44 percent (29-66), while Augustana shot 56 percent (25-45). The Vikings out-rebounded the Lady Reds, 36-28 but turned the ball over 32 times to just 17 for Carthage. Carthage's Diana Jacklin (So., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-17 field goals and three-of-three free throws, along with eight rebounds. Heather Gilmore (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill-Southeast) had 19 points on six-of-12 from the floor and six-of-six free throws, along with three assists, while Allison Groessl (So., Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) came off the bench to score 11 points. Natalie Runge topped the Vikings with 18 points. Lani Kasten scored 16 points with a game-high 10 rebounds, and Dori Gills had 16 points.
Carthage travels to Naperville, Ill., on Tuesday, Jan. 19 to play CCIW-opponent North Central College (3-12, 0-4 CCIW) in a 7:30 p.m. game at Merner Fieldhouse/Gregory Arena.
