Carthage Battles Lawrence to 1-1 Draw

APPLETON, Wis. — The Carthage College women's soccer team battled Lawrence to a 1-1 draw on Thursday evening at The Banta Bowl. The Firebirds took an early lead on a goal from Malie Cassel before the Vikings equalized late in the first half. Neither team was able to find a game-winning goal in the second half as Carthage and Lawrence finished level.

The Basics​

How it Happened​

  • Carthage came out attacking early, recording the first three shots of the match while earning three corner kicks during the opening 20 minutes.
  • Bella Fusco registered Carthage's first shot on goal in the ninth minute, forcing Lawrence goalkeeper Ally Littau to make the save.
  • The Firebirds broke through in the 29th minute when Malie Cassel scored her first goal of the season at 28:09. Cassel's unassisted finish gave Carthage a 1-0 advantage.
  • Carthage continued to pressure Lawrence after taking the lead, earning two additional corner kicks and creating another scoring opportunity from Maddie Mahon.
  • Lawrence answered just before halftime when Emi Grill scored at 44:37 off an assist from Elena Hartung, sending the teams into halftime tied 1-1.
  • Carthage controlled possession at 53% to Lawrence's  47% during the opening half and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks while both teams recorded five shots.
  • The Firebirds created the first scoring opportunity of the second half when Lydia Sachs tested Littau with a shot on goal in the 47th minute.
  • Lawrence responded with pressure of its own, but Tatiana Valdez made a save on Kylie Grimes in the 55th minute to keep the match tied.
  • Fusco continued to create opportunities for Carthage, forcing another save in the 64th minute before sending a shot wide in the 71st minute. 
  • Lawrence generated several chances late in the match, but Valdez made saves on Grimes in the 81st minute and Kylie Melonis in the 86th minute to preserve the draw.
  • Neither team could find a late breakthrough, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Carthage finished with nine shots, four shots on goal and six corner kicks, while Lawrence recorded 11 shots and four shots on goal.

High Flyers​

  • Malie Cassel scored Carthage's lone goal of the match, recording two shots and one shot on goal.
  • Bella Fusco led the Firebirds with three shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Lydia Sachs recorded one shot on goal and tested Lawrence's goalkeeper early in the second half.
  • Tatiana Valdez played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves, including two important stops during the final 10 minutes.
  • Carthage finished with a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams recorded four shots on goal and three saves.
