Carthage Starts 2026 With Home-Opening Win Over Edgewood

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 1-0 victory over Edgewood on Tuesday night at Art Keller Field. The Firebirds controlled the contest from the opening whistle, outshooting the Eagles 22-2 and holding an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal while getting a first-half goal from Emma Amberg to secure the win.

How it Happened
  • Carthage came out aggressively, generating several scoring chances during the opening minutes. Peyton Olinski recorded an early shot before Reese Staniak hit the top woodwork in the fifth minute.
  • Emma Amberg continued to pressure the Edgewood defense, forcing a save in the eighth minute before putting another shot on goal later in the opening period.
  • The Firebirds broke through in the 20th minute when Amberg found the back of the net at 19:49. The goal came after a ball was fed into the box, where Amberg fought for possession before taking one touch and finishing with her left foot to give Carthage a 1-0 advantage.
  • Carthage continued to control play following the goal, creating additional chances from Malie Cassel, Lydia Sachs, and Mia Jones while earning multiple corner kicks.
  • The Firebirds nearly doubled the lead late in the first half, with Jones forcing a save in the 43rd minute before Carthage generated three consecutive corner kicks in the final two minutes of the period.
  • Carthage carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting Edgewood 10-0 during the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Firebirds continued applying pressure early in the second half. Olinski and Addyson Hammond registered shots before Cassel and Maya Lanier tested Edgewood goalkeeper Madeline Brown in the opening five minutes.
  • Carthage continued to create opportunities throughout the second half, with Lanier, Staniak, and Cassel each recording additional shots. Staniak nearly found the back of the net in the 67th minute, hitting the left woodwork.
  • Edgewood generated its best opportunity of the night in the 81st minute when Sarah Bolchen put a shot on goal, but Carthage goalkeeper Tatiana Valdez made the save to preserve the shutout.
  • Carthage continued to pressure the Eagles late, earning additional corner kicks and forcing Brown to make saves on attempts from Amberg, Cassel, and Eve Hockerman before closing out the 1-0 victory.


High Flyers
  • Emma Amberg provided the game's lone goal, scoring in the 20th minute while finishing with four shots and three shots on goal.
  • Malie Cassel recorded a team-high five shots, including two on goal, as Carthage consistently pressured the Edgewood defense.

  • Tatiana Valdez played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save to earn the shutout in her Carthage debut.
