Carthage Stays Alive With 13-7 Win Over Illinois Wesleyan

DECATUR, Ill. — The No. 4-seeded Carthage College baseball team split a pair of games on Thursday at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, staying alive in the double-elimination bracket after eliminating No. 2-seeded Illinois Wesleyan with a 13-7 victory in the nightcap after falling 5-3 to top-seeded Millikin earlier in the day.

How it Happened
Game One 
  • In the opening game against Millikin, the Firebirds jumped ahead early with a three-run second inning. 
  • Christian Duarte brought home the first run after reaching on a throwing error before Paul Reedy and Jimmy Herget each added RBI singles to give Carthage a 3-0 lead.
  • Millikin responded with two runs in the bottom of the second before tying the game in the third on a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Big Blue took the lead for good in the fourth inning with back-to-back RBI singles to secure the 5-3 result.

Game Two
  • After Illinois Wesleyan opened the scoring in the second inning on a balk, the Firebirds responded immediately with a five-run bottom half. 
  • Michael Ossenfort tied the game with an RBI walk before Caden Meyer delivered a two-run single to left field. 
  • Zander Tubbs followed with an RBI single, and Joe Zuleger capped the inning with a run-scoring single up the middle to give Carthage a 5-1 lead.
  • The Titans answered with two runs in the third inning, but Carthage pushed the margin back to three on an RBI single from Herget that scored Dylan Ston.
  • Herget added another RBI single in the fifth inning before Ossenfort broke the game open with a three-run homer to left field, extending the Firebirds' lead to 10-3.
  • Illinois Wesleyan chipped away with two runs in the sixth and added two more in the seventh following a pair of Carthage errors to cut the deficit to 10-7.
  • The Firebirds answered again in the bottom of the seventh as Meyer doubled to left center to score Ossenfort before Zuleger lined a two-run double to right field, bringing home Tubbs and Meyer to stretch the lead back to six runs.
  • Illinois Wesleyan threatened in the ninth inning, loading the bases with two outs against reliever Hunter Becker, who pitched the final four innings. 
  • Becker escaped the jam with a game-ending flyout to secure the win and eliminate the tournament's No. 2 seed.
