Carthage’s Postseason Ends Following 12-9 Loss to North Park

DECATUR, Ill. — The Carthage College baseball team saw its postseason run come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 12-9 to North Park in Game 7 of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Baseball Tournament.

  • Final Score: No. 3 North Park 12, No. 4 Carthage 9

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds opened the scoring in the first inning as Michael Ossenfort crossed home on an RBI double from Caden Meyer. Later in the frame, AJ Gaca added an RBI groundout to give Carthage an early 2-0 lead.
  • North Park answered with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Vinnie Marvucic and RBI hits from Eli Johnson and Rylan Kawakami to move ahead 4-2.
  • Carthage responded in the third inning. Zander Tubbs delivered an RBI double down the right-field line to score Ossenfort before Meyer later scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 4-4.
  • The Firebirds regained momentum in the fifth inning with a three-run surge. Joe Zuleger brought home Landon Dykes-Sadowski with an RBI single before Dylan Ston followed with a two-run single through the right side to extend the advantage to 7-4.
  • North Park again rallied in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to even the contest at 7-7. Carthage briefly reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Ston drove in Gaca with a groundout, making it 8-7.
  • The Vikings answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning as Kawakami singled through the left side to tie the score once more at 8-8.
  • North Park broke the game open in the eighth inning with four runs. Reyn Matsuzaki drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single before Kupono Akaka added another RBI hit. Rylan Li capped the inning with a two-run double down the left-field line to push the lead to 12-8.
  • Carthage attempted a ninth-inning rally when Ston tripled to center field to score Christian Duarte, but the comeback fell short.


High Flyers
  • Zander Tubbs had three hits in the contest, while Christian Duarte and Dylan Ston had two. 
  • Ston had four RBIs in the game and a triple. 
  • Nate Tyrpin had three strikeouts on the mound for Carthage through 5.2 innings of work, throwing 89 pitches.
