Carthage Takes Opener at CCIW Baseball Championship

DECATUR — The fourth-seeded Carthage College baseball team opened the 2026 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Baseball Championship with a 5-4 victory over fifth-seeded Augustana (Ill.) on Wednesday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • Augustana struck first in the opening inning with an RBI single, but Carthage answered immediately as Michael Ossenfort scored on an Augustana throwing error to even the game at one.
  • The Firebirds took the lead in the second inning when Ossenfort drove in Paul Reedy with a groundout to make it 2-1. 
  • Carthage added another run in the third as Zander Tubbs launched a solo home run to left field, extending the advantage to 3-1.
  • Carthage held the lead until the seventh inning when Augustana tied the game with a pair of RBI singles.
  • The Firebirds responded in the eighth inning. Christian Duarte delivered an RBI single through the right side to score Eric Suarez and put Carthage back in front, 4-3. 
  • Later in the inning, Duarte came around to score on a throwing error following a fielder's choice, giving the Firebirds a two-run cushion.
  • Augustana threatened in the ninth with an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, but Carthage closed out the victory to advance in the CCIW Tournament as Santino Pignotti-Wojtak got a strikeout to win.
