Carthage Sweeps Augustana, Secures CCIW Tournament Bid

KENOSHA — The Carthage baseball team used a pair of strong offensive performances to complete a sweep of Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, securing a spot in the CCIW Tournament for the first time under head coach John Lequia.

Game One

How it Happened
Game One
  • The opener featured a back-and-forth battle before Carthage pulled away late for a 10-6 victory. The Firebirds opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Dylan Ston
  • After Augustana (Ill.) evened the score in the third, Zander Tubbs responded with a two-run home run to give Carthage a 3-1 lead.
  • Augustana (Ill.) chipped away and eventually surged ahead with a four-run sixth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. 
  • Carthage answered immediately in the bottom half, igniting a decisive rally. AJ Gaca tied the game with a solo home run before the Firebirds capitalized on a series of miscues and timely at-bats. 
  • Jimmy Herget drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Michael Ossenfort followed with an RBI on an error, and another run scored on a wild pitch to cap a four-run inning and restore control at 9-6.
  • A homer from Gaca stretched the lead to 10-6 as Carthage pitching sealed the victory as Santino Pignotti-Wojtak struck out five batters and got the final groundout to win the first. 
Game Two
  • In game two, Tubbs set the tone early with a solo home run in the first inning, and Ossenfort extended the lead with a two-run blast in the third.
  • After Augustana (Ill.) scored its lone run in the fourth, Carthage responded with a two-run single from Herget later in the inning to make it 5-1. 
  • The Firebirds broke the game open in the sixth, plating six runs in the frame. Carthage drew five walks in the inning, each producing a run, while Tubbs added an RBI after being hit by a pitch.
  • In the seventh, Wyatt Modory got the final out, completing the complete game win with a final strikeout. 


High Flyers
  • Carthage had six homers in the doubleheader, with AJ Gaca belting two. 
  • Michael Ossenfort had six RBIs in the games, while Christian Duarte and Gaca tallied doubles. 
  • On the mound, Brendan Roberts picked up the win in game one, striking out four over six innings of work. 
  • Modory struck out seven and allowed only one run over 122 total pitches. 
Team Results
  • With the sweep, Carthage punches its ticket to the CCIW Tournament, marking a significant milestone in Lequia's first season at the helm. 
  • Carthage will play as the No. 4 seed and will against the No. 5 Augustana.
  • The double-elimination conference tournament is set to begin Wednesday, May 6, 2026, with all games hosted by Millikin in Decatur, Ill.
