Big Second Inning Lifts Carthage to Split with Lakeland

KENOSHA — Carthage split its doubleheader against Lakeland on Thursday, riding a dominant offensive outburst in the opener to a 17-5 victory before falling 6-3 in the nightcap. The Firebirds plated nine runs in the second inning of Game one to seize control early, while Lakeland used a late push in Game two to secure the split.

How it Happened
Game One
  • In Game one, Carthage broke the contest open with a nine-run second inning. 
  • Jimmy Herget got the scoring started with an RBI single, and the Firebirds capitalized on hit batters and timely hitting to extend the lead. 
  • Christian Duarte delivered a two-run single, and AJ Gaca capped the inning with a grand slam to center, pushing the advantage to 9-0.
  • Carthage continued to add on in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Zander Tubbs and an RBI single by Joe Zuleger to make it 12-0. Duarte later added a sacrifice fly as the Firebirds built a 13-0 cushion. 
  • Lakeland responded with a three-run homer in the fourth, but Carthage answered immediately with a solo home run from Paul Reedy and an RBI single by Michael Ossenfort
  • Additional RBIs from Dylan Ston and Duarte in the sixth extended the lead to 17-4 before Lakeland added a run in the seventh.
Game Two
  • In Game two, Lakeland used late offense to secure a 6-3 win. Lakeland struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on a Carthage error. 
  • The Firebirds answered in the third with a solo home run from Ossenfort and an RBI double by Zuleger to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Lakeland regained control in the fifth, tying the game on a wild pitch before taking a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly. 
  • Carthage evened the score in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Caden Meyer, but Lakeland responded in the eighth with a two-run bunt single and a throwing error to regain the lead. 
  • An additional RBI single later in the inning provided the final margin.
