Big Swings Carry Carthage Past Illinois Wesleyan

KENOSHA — Carthage broke a late tie with a two-run eighth inning to secure an 8-6 victory over Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at home.

How it Happened
  • Carthage wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Caden Meyer delivered an RBI single to score Michael Ossenfort, and Eric Fugate Jr. followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Zander Tubbs for a 2-0 lead.
  • Illinois Wesleyan answered in the second on an RBI groundout, then took control in the third. The visitors tied the game with an RBI single before a throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving the Titans a 3-2 advantage.
  • Carthage quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning as Meyer launched a two-run home run to left, scoring Dylan Ston and reclaiming a 4-3 lead. 
  • Ossenfort extended the margin in the fourth with a solo home run, and AJ Gaca added an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 6-3.
  • The Titans chipped away late, beginning with a solo home run from Ferraro in the sixth. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan then rallied in the eighth, scoring twice on RBI singles to even the score at six.
  • Carthage answered immediately in the bottom of the eighth. Ossenfort crushed his second home run of the game to regain the lead, and Joe Zuleger followed with an RBI single to provide insurance.
  • The home team held Illinois Wesleyan scoreless in the ninth to close out the 8-6 win.
