Carthage Comeback Effort Spoiled in Final At-Bat

LITTLE CHUTE — The Carthage College baseball team mounted a ninth-inning rally but lost 5-4 to Lawrence in the final non-conference game of the regular season, ending with a walk-off home run.

How it Happened
  • Carthage jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Zander Tubbs delivered an RBI double to score Dylan Ston, putting the Firebirds ahead 1-0. 
  • The advantage grew in the fourth inning as Max Tindall added an RBI single, plating Paul Reedy to make it 2-0.
  • Lawrence answered in the bottom half of the fourth with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1. 
  • After a scoreless stretch, the home team surged ahead in the seventh inning. An RBI single tied the game before a balk allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving Lawrence a 3-2 lead.
  • An additional run came across in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, extending the margin to 4-2 entering the ninth.
  • Carthage responded with urgency in its final at-bat. Christian Duarte brought the Firebirds within one with an RBI single, scoring Tubbs and advancing Dawson Gaynor to third. 
  • Gaynor then crossed the plate on a wild pitch, tying the game at four.
  • The game remained even only briefly, as Lawrence answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 5-4 decision.
