Carthage Outlasts Elmhurst in Extra-Inning Battle

ELMHURST — The Carthage College baseball team battled through a back-and-forth contest and emerged with a 6-5 victory in 12 innings, scoring the decisive run in the final frame before Santino Pignotti-Wojtak shut the door with 3.1 innings of dominant relief, including three strikeouts in the bottom of the 12th to secure the win.

How it Happened
  • Carthage opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI play from AJ Gaca, but Elmhurst answered with three runs in the bottom half to take an early 3-1 lead. 
  • The Firebirds responded in the second, capitalizing on a strikeout that allowed two runs to score and even the game at three.
  • After the home team regained the lead in the fourth, Carthage pulled even again in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Christian Duarte. Elmhurst quickly answered with a solo home run in the bottom half to move back in front, 5-4.
  • Trailing in the ninth, Carthage forced extras when Paul Reedy came through with a game-tying RBI single to center, scoring Tubbs.
  • From there, the Firebirds relied on timely hitting and strong pitching, with Tubbs delivering the decisive hit in the 12th before Pignotti-Wojtak slammed the door in the final inning to complete the extra-inning victory.
