Firebirds Sweep Bluejays as Pitching Staff Shines

KENOSHA — Carthage swept Elmhurst in Saturday's conference doubleheader, using a blend of timely offense and dominant pitching to secure a 6-1 victory in the opener and a 2-0 shutout in game two. Brendan Roberts tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts in game one, while Wyatt Modory followed with a season-best 12 strikeouts to lead the Firebirds in the nightcap.

How it Happened
Game One
  • After Elmhurst opened the scoring in the first inning, the Firebirds answered immediately. Joe Zuleger brought home the tying run with an RBI groundout, evening the score at 1-1.
  • Carthage took control in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues. Landon Dykes-Sadowski reached on a throwing error that allowed a run to score, and Dylan Ston followed with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 3-1. 
  • The Firebirds added another run in the fourth inning, again taking advantage of an Elmhurst error, before Zuleger delivered the game's lone extra-base highlight with a solo home run to left-center in the fifth.
  • Dykes-Sadowski added insurance in the eighth with an RBI single, aided by another throwing error, pushing the advantage to 6-1.
  • On the mound, Brendan Roberts delivered a dominant and durable performance. The senior went the distance, pitching all nine innings while striking out nine batters across 126 pitches.
Game Two
  • The Firebirds manufactured the game's first run in the second inning, as Jimmy Herget lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Dawson Gaynor
  • Carthage added an insurance run in the fourth when Paul Reedy delivered a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Joe Zuleger for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Wyatt Modory controlled the game from the mound, delivering a dominant outing. Modory struck out a season-best 12 batters and kept Elmhurst off the scoreboard throughout, securing the shutout victory.


High Flyers
  • Joe Zuleger, Paul Reedy and Jimmy Herget all had two hits at the plate. 
  • Zuleger added two hits in game two. 
  • On the mound, the nine strikeouts for Roberts in game one was his season's best.
