KENOSHA - The Carthage Firebirds women's lacrosse team returned to action on Wednesday afternoon for a conference matchup against the Elmhurst Bluejays. Delivering a commanding road performance, shutting out the Bluejays behind an explosive attack and a dominant defensive effort.
FIRST PERIOD
- Carthage opened the scoring at the 10:08 mark of the first quarter when Rosie Nolan capitalized on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Auggie Claridge.
- Piper LeFevre followed with a goal at 6:46, before Claridge found the back of the net herself at 4:13.
- Nolan added her second goal of the quarter at 3:24, assisted by Kyleigh Higgins, and Shannon Heitschmidt capped the scoring run with a goal at 1:04 off another assist from Claridge, giving the Firebirds an 8-0 advantage after one.
SECOND PERIOD
- The offensive momentum carried into the second quarter, where Carthage added five more goals to extend its lead.
- Nolan struck again at 12:54, followed shortly by Hannah Kim at 12:11. LeFevre converted a free-position attempt at 9:24, while Kim netted her second goal at 1:29 with an assist from Claridge.
- LeFevre closed out the half with her third goal at 0:39, assisted by Heitschmidt, sending Carthage into halftime with a commanding 13-0 lead.
THIRD PERIOD
- Coming out of the break, the Firebirds remained in control, adding three more goals in the third quarter.
- LeFevre scored again at 11:20, Heitschmidt followed at 8:25, and Kim converted a man-up free-position opportunity at 5:58 to push the lead to 16-0 heading into the final period.
FOURTH PERIOD
- With the outcome well decided, Carthage added one final goal in the fourth quarter when Katy Berni found the back of the net at the 2:00 mark.
- The Firebirds' defense held firm throughout the contest, preventing Elmhurst from generating any scoring opportunities and securing the 17-0 shutout victory.
- Claridge led all scorers with four goals and three assists.
- LeFevre recorded four goals.
- Nolan added three goals.
- In goal, Xochitl Delvale-Vera anchored the defense in the net, securing the shutout, and recorded two saves.
- Carthage recorded 38 total shots and 25 shots on goal.
"Another great team win," said head coach Maddie Berni. "Glad we kept our composure and played our game. Shoutout to our goalies and defense for another shutout. Time to get ready for Saturday."
