Carthage Erases Early Deficit, Tops Illinois Wesleyan for First Time Since 2017

BLOOMINGTON — The Carthage College men's lacrosse team secured its third conference win on Saturday, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 12-9 on the road. This marked their first victory over the Titans since 2017.


The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 12 - Illinois Wesleyan 9

How it Happened
  • Illinois Wesleyan controlled the opening quarter, scoring four times in less than eight minutes to build a 4-0 lead. The visitors continued their run early in the second, extending the margin to 5-0 before Carthage broke through at 8:02. Andy Slattery put the Firebirds on the board off an assist from Brandon Sawicki, but Illinois Wesleyan answered again to take a 6-1 advantage into halftime.
  • Momentum shifted dramatically in the third quarter as Carthage mounted its comeback. Henry Arnold ignited the surge with an unassisted goal at 13:54, and Jake Westland followed just eight seconds later. Arnold added another to trim the deficit to two.
  • After Illinois Wesleyan briefly pushed the lead back to three, Carthage responded with a sustained run. Kyle Cissne scored unassisted, and Sawicki converted a feed from Slattery to make it a one-goal game. 
  • Arnold tied the score at 7-7 with a man-up goal, and Alex Bailey gave the Firebirds their first lead at 3:00 off an assist from Rye Taylor
  • Carthage outscored Illinois Wesleyan 7-1 in the period to take an 8-7 edge into the fourth.
  • The home team evened the score early in the final quarter, but Carthage quickly regained control. Josh Flores answered to put the Firebirds back in front, and after another equalizer, Westland delivered back-to-back goals to create separation. He first finished off a pass from Arnold before adding an unassisted score less than two minutes later.
  • George Mobraaten capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 5:57, sealing the 12-9 win.

High Flyers
  • Jake Westland and Henry Arnold each scored three goals in the game. Arnold finished with four points by adding an assist.
  • In the contest, Josh Flores and Jake Williamson each recorded eight ground balls, while George Mobraaten closely followed with six. 
  • Westland registered five ground balls. Flores led the team with seven caused turnovers, and Williamson made 11 saves in goal for Carthage.

  • The Firebirds head home to play Elmhurst in a key matchup on Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m.
