Firebirds Launch Seven Home Runs in 15-3 Rout of Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON — The Carthage College baseball team started strong and maintained control, showcasing a powerful offensive display to defeat Illinois Wesleyan, 15-3, completing the weekend sweep of the Titans.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds set the tone in the opening inning, plating three runs without recording a hit. An RBI walk by Eric Fugate Jr., followed by a bunt fielder's choice from Dylan Ston and a sacrifice fly by AJ Gaca, gave Carthage a 3-0 lead.
  • After Illinois Wesleyan got on the board in the second, Carthage delivered a decisive blow in the third inning. 
  • The Firebirds launched five home runs in the frame — coming from Fugate, Paul Reedy, Michael Ossenfort, Caden Meyer, and Zander Tubbs — to break the game open and extend the lead to 9-1.
  • Carthage continued to pile on in the fourth as Ossenfort connected again, this time for a three-run homer to make it 12-1. Gaca added a two-run shot in the fifth, pushing the advantage to 14-1.
  • Illinois Wesleyan scored twice in the sixth, but the Firebirds answered in the seventh with an RBI single from Reedy to cap the scoring.
  • Carthage finished with seven home runs in the game and 15 total runs, securing a convincing 15-3 victory.
