Long Ball Fuels Carthage in Victory Against Carroll

KENOSHA — A five-run fifth inning flipped the game and sent the Carthage baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Carroll (Wis.) on Tuesday, as the home side used timely hitting and dominant relief pitching to pull away after an early back-and-forth.

How it Happened
  • Carroll (Wis.) struck first in the opening inning on a solo home run from Leo Matuga, but Carthage answered immediately. 
  • Eric Fugate Jr. delivered an RBI single up the middle to even the score at one, scoring Michael Ossenfort.
  • The Firebirds took their first lead in the second inning when Ossenfort doubled to center field, bringing home Jimmy Herget for a 2-1 edge.
  • Carroll (Wis.) responded in the fourth, plating two runs to regain a 3-2 advantage.
  • Carthage answered decisively in the fifth. Dylan Ston tied the game with an RBI single, and AJ Gaca followed with another run-scoring hit to put the Firebirds back in front. 
  • Moments later, Paul Reedy broke the game open with a three-run home run down the left-field line, extending the lead to 7-3.
  • Caden Meyer added insurance in the sixth inning with a solo home run to left, capping the scoring at 8-3.
  • On the mound, Santino Pignotti-Wojtak entered in the sixth inning and made an immediate impact, striking out the first three batters he faced. 
  • Carthage pitching combined to keep Carroll (Wis.) off the scoreboard over the final five innings to secure the win.
