Late Goals Seal Carthage Victory Against North Central (Ill.)

KENOSHA — Carthage built a commanding early lead and withstood a furious rally from North Central (Ill.) to secure a 10-9 victory on Saturday afternoon for their second conference win of the season.

How it Happened
  • The Firebirds controlled the opening half, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter. Brandon Sawicki opened the scoring just under a minute into the contest, and Henry Arnold followed with an unassisted goal to make it 2-0. Angelo Cullen added to the margin midway through the period before Collin McClure capped the quarter with a goal off an assist from Jake Westland.
  • Carthage extended its lead in the second quarter, scoring three times in three minutes. 
  • Westland found the back of the net before Cullen converted a man-up opportunity, and Kyle Carollo pushed the advantage to 7-1 heading into halftime.
  • North Central (Ill.) shifted momentum in the second half, holding Carthage scoreless through the third quarter while rattling off four unanswered goals to cut the deficit to 7-5. 
  • The Cardinals continued their surge into the fourth, tying the game at 7-7 before eventually taking their first lead of the contest at 9-7 with just under four minutes to play.
  • Carthage answered when it mattered most as Carollo sparked the response with an unassisted goal, and Sawicki followed shortly after off a feed from Westland to even the score at nine. 
  • Moments later, Arnold delivered the game-winner with 2:16 remaining, sealing the Firebirds' comeback victory.
