Late Push Falls Short in 13-10 Loss to Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS — Despite a four-goal effort from Collin McClure and a late push in the second half, Carthage fell to Calvin 13-10 on Saturday. The Firebirds battled back multiple times, including tying the game midway through the second quarter, but the Knights used a late first-half surge and a strong third quarter to maintain control.

How it Happened
  • Calvin started with a 3-0 lead before Carthage answered with a strong offensive push. Collin McClure put the Firebirds on the board at 13:25 off an assist from Brandon Sawicki, then scored again at 12:01 on a feed from Alex Bailey to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • After Calvin scored an unassisted goal at the 10:53 mark, Aiden Wiese responded with a goal at 8:51.
  • McClure completed his hat trick at 7:29 with a goal assisted by Kyle Carollo, tying the game at 4-4.
  • The teams traded goals late in the second quarter. A goal gave Calvin a 5-4 edge at 5:37 before McClure netted his fourth goal of the half at 3:37, again assisted by Carollo, tying the contest at five.
  • Calvin closed the half with two late goals, sending the Knights into halftime with a 7-5 lead.
  • Calvin added to its margin early in the third quarter with two goals to make it 9-5.
  • Jake Westland halted the run with an unassisted goal at 10:00, but Calvin answered with consecutive unassisted tallies to extend the margin to 11-6.
  • Another goal at 3:24 gave Calvin a 12-6 advantage.
  • Carthage closed the third quarter with momentum. Westland scored at 1:57 off an assist from McClure, and Andy Slattery added an unassisted goal with five seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 12-8 entering the fourth.
  • The Firebirds continued to push in the final quarter as Rye Taylor scored at 14:20 off an assist from Slattery, cutting the margin to three.
  • Calvin answered with a goal at 11:34 to extend the margin back to four.
  • Westland recorded his third goal of the game with 3:16 remaining to make it 13-10, but Carthage was unable to close the gap further as the Knights held on for the victory.
