Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short as Carthage Drops 8-7 Overtime Decision

APPLETON — Carthage erased multiple deficits and briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter, but a goal in overtime lifted Lawrence to an 8-7 victory on Thursday evening. The Firebirds rallied from a three-goal second-half deficit and scored three straight goals in the fourth quarter to move ahead before Lawrence tied the game late and secured the win in the extra period.

How it Happened
  • Lawrence opened the game with two quick goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Carthage answered in the second period as Andy Slattery scored twice in just over a minute, including a man-up goal assisted by Jake Westland, to tie the game at two.
  • The teams continued to trade goals throughout the second period. Lawrence regained the lead before Landon Bakke tied the contest at three with an assist from Brandon Sawicki.
  • Lawrence responded with two late goals to close the half and take a 5-3 advantage into halftime.
  • Lawrence added another goal early in the third period to extend the lead to 6-3. 
  • Carthage answered later in the period when Collin McClure scored off a pass from Kyle Carollo, trimming the deficit to 6-4 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Firebirds mounted a comeback early in the fourth period. Rye Taylor scored off an assist from Carollo before Keyan Schugel found the net nine seconds later to even the score at six. 
  • Westland then gave Carthage its first lead of the game with an unassisted goal midway through the quarter.
  • Lawrence tied the game again with 6:06 remaining to force overtime. In the overtime period, the home team scored the game-winning goal with 3:13 remaining to secure the 8-7 victory.
