Carthage 19, UW-Stevens Point 3
KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team returned to action Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup against UW-Stevens Point. Controlling and dominating all four periods, the Firebirds swept the win over the Pointers from the start with early goals and balanced offensive attack throughout.Â
FIRST PERIOD
- Carthage came out firing and set the tone early with a six-goal opening quarter.
Auggie Claridge opened the scoring at 14:12 off an assist from Piper LeFevre, sparking a quick offensive surge. Kyleigh Higgins followed with an unassisted goal before Claridge connected with Rosie Nolan to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Firebirds capitalized on player-up opportunities, as Shannon Heitschmidt and Claridge each netted man-up goals, both assisted by Higgins. Kelsey O'Brien capped the period with a goal off a feed from Heitschmidt, giving Carthage a dominant 6-0 lead after one period.
SECOND PERIOD
- The offensive momentum continued into the second as Carthage added seven more goals. Heitschmidt struck early, followed by Hannah Kim to push the lead further. LeFevre added a power-play goal off another assist from Heitschmidt.
- UW–Stevens Point briefly got on the board, but Firebirds quickly responded. Heitschmidt netted her second of the quarter, Higgins added another, and Claridge found the back of the net again. After a second Pointers goal, Karlie Young closed the half scoring with an assist from Higgins, leading 13-2.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Firebirds maintained control in the third, adding four more goals while shutting out UW–Stevens Point. LeFevre opened the scoring, followed by Nolan's second goal of the game, assisted by Higgins.Â
- LeFevre added another, and Claridge closed the period with her fourth goal. The Firebirds' defense remained strong, holding the Pointers scoreless and limiting their offensive chances.
FOURTH PERIOD
- Carthage added two more goals in the final frame to seal the victory.
- Higgins scored early in the period before UW–Stevens Point managed their third goal of the game. Heitschmidt answered with a fourth goal of the night to round out the scoring at 19-3.
- Heitschmidt led all scorers with four goals and two assists.
- Claridge recorded four goals and one assist.
- Higgins added three goals and four assists.
- In goal, Xochitl Delvale-Vera anchored the defense and recorded five saves.
- Carthage recorded 40 total shots and 27 shots on goal.
"Great win on both sides of the field," said head coach Maddie Berni. "Defense did a great job making stops and getting the ball back. Offense did a great job finding the back of the net. Awesome team wins!"
