Carthage 12, Whitworth 7
WALLA WALLA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team returned to action Friday evening for a non-conference match-up against Whitworth, to close their spring break trip in Washington. The Firebirds used a dominant second period to build a large lead and held off a late Whitworth push to secure the win.
FIRST PERIOD
- Carthage struck early to take control of the opening period. Hannah Kim opened the scoring at the 12:48 mark with an assist from Auggie Claridge. Just 41 seconds later, Kelsey O'Brien added another goal to give the Firebirds a quick 2–0 lead.
- Whitworth responded midway through the period with a goal to cut the deficit to one. The Firebirds maintained the advantage and closed the period leading 2–1.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Firebirds exploded offensively in the second period, scoring seven goals to break the game open. O'Brien started the run early in the period, followed by back-to-back goals from Claridge and Kim. O'Brien then completed the hat trick during the stretch as Carthage continued to pressure the Whitworth defense. Isabella Kuyava, Kyleigh Higgins, and Claridge added goals late in the period to extend the lead. By halftime, the Firebirds had built a commanding 9–1 advantage.
THIRD PERIOD
- Carthage continued the momentum early in the third period with goals from Claridge and Higgins to push the lead to 11–1.
- Whitworth began to mount a response later in the period, scoring three consecutive goals to narrow the gap. Despite the late surge, the Firebirds maintained a 11–4 lead heading into the final period.
FOURTH PERIOD
- Whitworth continued its push in the fourth period, scoring three straight goals to cut the Carthage lead to four.
- The Firebirds responded midway through the period when Claridge converted on a man up opportunity with an assist from Higgins. Carthage's defense held strong over the remaining minutes to secure the 12–7 victory.
- Claridge led the Firebirds with four goals and one assist.
- O'Brien recorded three goals in the win.
- In goal, Xochitl Delvale-Vera helped anchor the defensive effort as Carthage limited Whiworth to seven goals and recorded four saves in the contest.
- Carthage recorded 27 total shots and 17 shots on goal.
"Good way to end the trip in Washington," said head coach Maddie Berni. "Played some great competition. Super proud of how everyone played today, we really supported each other all over the field!"
