Firebirds Battle Back Before Concordia Pulls Away Late

KENOSHA — The Carthage men's lacrosse team mounted a second-half rally but could not overcome an early deficit in a 13-7 loss to Concordia (Wis.). After trailing by three midway through the second quarter, the Firebirds scored three straight goals to pull within one and later erased a two-goal deficit early in the third quarter before the Falcons pulled away late.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Concordia (Wis.) 13 - Carthage 7
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Art Keller Field
  • Records: Concordia (Wis.) 6-0, Carthage 4-5
How it Happened
  • The visitors struck first with two goals in the opening period to take an early 2-0 lead. Carthage answered late in the quarter when Brandon Sawicki finished a play from Collin McClure with 1:54 remaining, cutting the deficit to one heading into the second period.
  • The Falcons regained momentum early in the second quarter, scoring twice to stretch the lead to 4-1.
  • Carthage responded with a goal from Rye Taylor, assisted by Sawicki, before Concordia added another to make it 5-2.
  • The Firebirds then surged back into the game. Ethan Cotterman scored twice in less than two minutes — first on an unassisted effort and then off a pass from Jake Westland — trimming the deficit to 5-4.
  • The Falcons answered before halftime to carry a 6-4 advantage into the break.
  • Carthage continued its push early in the third quarter. Sawicki scored off an assist from Taylor to make it 6-5, and Cotterman completed his hat trick just over a minute later with a goal from Andy Slattery to tie the game at six.
  • The visitors regained control midway through the period with a man-up goal and added three more scores before the end of the quarter, building a 10-6 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The Firebirds stopped the run early in the final quarter when Taylor scored an unassisted goal to make it 11-7, but Concordia added two more goals in the closing minutes to seal the 13-7 result.
