Carthage Comes Up Short to End Weekend Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE — The Carthage baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, falling 7-1 to Ohio Northern before suffering a 13-1 setback against Kalamazoo. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final Score: Ohio Northern 7 - Carthage 1

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds held the visitors scoreless through two innings before Ohio Northern pushed across two runs in the third to take an early lead. 
  • The margin grew to 3-0 in the fifth on aggressive baserunning.
  • Carthage answered in the bottom half of the inning. Michael Ossenfort came home on a passed ball, trimming the deficit to 3-1 and providing a spark for the Firebirds.
  • Ohio Northern responded in the sixth with an RBI single, then benefited from a throwing error that allowed another unearned run to score, stretching the advantage to 5-1.
  • The visitors added two runs on a home run in the ninth and capitalized on another Carthage error to plate an additional unearned run, sealing the 7-1 final.

Game Two
  • Kalamazoo struck quickly in the first inning, using a two-run home run and an RBI single aided by a Carthage error to build a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Hornets added two more runs in the second on a two-run double to extend the margin to 5-0.
  • Kalamazoo continued to apply pressure in the third. 
  • A sacrifice fly pushed the lead to 6-0 before a grand slam to left-center broke the game open at 10-0.
  • Carthage got on the board in the fourth when Joe Zuleger doubled down the left-field line, driving in Zander Tubbs to make it 10-1.
  • Kalamazoo answered in the fifth with a two-run double and an RBI single, stretching the advantage to 13-1 and sealing the final score.


High Flyers
  • During game one, Wyatt Modory struckout 10 batters over 5.2 innings of work and only allowed three hits. 
  • Joe Zuleger recorded a double in game two against Kalamazoo. 


Team Results
  • The Firebirds head to Tucson, Ariz., to begin the Tucson Invitational, which begins Saturday, March 7, at 10 a.m. MST against Bethany Lutheran.
