Firebirds Surge Early, Hold Off Spalding for Lequia’s First Victory

LOUISVILLE — Carthage opened the season with a 6-5 victory over Spalding on Friday afternoon, delivering head coach John Lequia his first win at the helm.

How it Happened
  • Carthage seized control early, erupting for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Zander Tubbs started the surge with a single through the right side, bringing home Dylan Ston for the season's first run.
  • AJ Gaca followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Tubbs to score on the throw and extending the lead to 2-0.
  • The inning broke open when Michael Ossenfort blasted a three-run home run to left field. Christian Duarte and Joe Zuleger also scored on the play, stretching the advantage to 5-0 before the side was retired.
  • Spalding responded with an RBI single in the top of the first to make it 5-1.
  • A groundout to shortstop in the second inning plated another run, trimming the margin to 5-2.
  • After a scoreless third, an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth cut the lead to 5-3. 
  • An RBI single to left center in the fifth brought the score to 5-4.
  • The Firebirds were held off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, when Paul Reedy delivered a single through the left side to score Eric Fugate Jr. Ossenfort advanced to second on the play as Carthage added a key insurance run for a 6-4 lead.
  • An RBI single in the eighth pulled Spalding one within 6-5, but Carthage closed out the final outs to secure the season-opening victory.
