Late-Inning Heroics Propel Firebirds to Doubleheader Sweep at Carroll

WAUKESHA. – Behind timely hitting and strong performances on the mound, the Carthage College baseball team swept a road doubleheader against Carroll on Saturday at Frame Park. The Firebirds opened the day with a 5-1 victory, fueled by a two-run homer from P.J. Moser and a late three-run inning, before capping the sweep with a 4-2 extra-inning win, highlighted by Moser's go-ahead two-run double in the 10th.

How it Happened 
Game One
  • Carroll (Wis.) opened the scoring in the second inning on a wild pitch that allowed a run to cross, but Carthage answered in the third. 
  • P.J. Moser belted a two-run home run, scoring Max Cairo to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead.
  • The game remained a pitcher's duel until the eighth, when Carthage capitalized on the Pioneer miscues. 
  • Matt Felber brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt, then Chuckie Smith scored on a balk before Drew Knecht came home on a passed ball to make it 5-1.
  • After a walk in the ninth, Jake Hartman Jr. got a strikeout and a double play to secure the win 5-1. 
Game Two
  • Carthage fell behind early after Carroll (Wis.) took a 1-0 lead in the third, but the Firebirds answered in the fourth when Drew Knecht's RBI single tied the game. 
  • In the fifth, Cairo gave Carthage a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring single up the middle.
  • The Pioneers pulled even in the seventh with an RBI groundout, and both teams were held scoreless through the ninth. 
  • In the 10th, AJ Gaca and Evan Devine reached base before Moser laced a double to right, driving in the go-ahead runs.
  • Jake Pappagallo tossed the final 3.1 innings in relief to earn the win getting a strikeout, flyout and groundout to secure the win. 

High Flyers
  • Max Cairo, Chuckie Smith and Matt Felber all had two hits in game one, P.J. Moser belted a two-run homer.  
  • Drew Knecht had two hits in game two, Smith, AJ Gaca and Moser all had a double in the game.
  • Bryce Schaum improved to 4-2 on the mound, scattering eight hits over seven strong innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Jake Hartman Jr. closed out the final two frames to earn his third save of the season.
  • Jake Pappagallo tossed the final 3.1 innings in relief of game two. Pappagallo improved to 3-1 on the season as he allowed just two hits and struck out three
