Firebirds Storm Back to Stun Carroll, Cap Off Weekend Sweep

KENOSHA – Carthage College baseball overcame early struggles and swept the series against Carroll on Sunday at Augie Schmidt Field. The Firebirds were 5-0 early but rallied back in the third inning to make it a one-run game. They completed the comeback in the eighth with a two-run Collin Callahan RBI single that gave Carthage a 7-6 lead. Jake Hartman Jr. sealed the win with two strikeouts in the ninth.

How it Happened 
  • Carthage fell behind early after Carroll (Wis.) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after two RBI singles.
  • Carroll extended the lead after a two-run homer in the second. Another run in the third made it 5-0. 
  • The Firebirds stormed back in their half of the third inning with a four-run rally to cut the deficit to one.
  • Max Cairo got things started with an RBI single, followed by a run-scoring double by P.J. Moser. Matt Felber brought in another with a sac fly and Zander Tubbs capped off the inning with an infield RBI single. 
  • Carroll (Wis.) added another run in the fourth to extend their lead. 
  • Carthage answered with a run of their own in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Zander Tubbs
  • The Firebirds rallied back once more as Drew Knecht singled and AJ Gaca followed with a walk.
  • Both runners advanced on a balk, setting the stage for Collin Callahan, who came through with a two-run single to give Carthage the lead 7-6 in the eighth inning. 
  • Jake Hartman Jr. finished the game off with two strikeouts and a groundout to secure the 7-6 win.

High Flyers
  • Collin Callahan and Zander Tubbs each had two hits with two RBIs.
  • Max Cairo went three-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored. 
  • Drew Knecht reached base three times, batting two-for-three with a walk and one run scored. 
  • On the mound, Kosta Kokos tossed five innings in relief, allowing no earned runs and recording four strikeouts.
  • James Lindenmuth earned his first win of the season after entering in the eighth with runners on second and third and one out and delivered back-to-back outs to keep the game within one. 
  • Jake Hartman Jr. earned his fourth save of the season, pitching one inning with two strikeouts.
