Firebirds Rally to Top Augustana 13-10 in Thrilling Comeback Victory

KENOSHA – Carthage College baseball outlasted Augustana (Ill.) 13-10 in a high-scoring, back-and-forth battle. Evan Devine gave the Firebirds an early boost with a two-RBI single in the second inning. After Augustana (Ill.) took the lead with a four-run fourth, Carthage answered with a big rally, highlighted by a two-RBI hit from Collin Callahan. Matt Felber, Drew Knecht and Zander Tubbs each delivered key RBIs as the Firebirds pulled away late. Felber and Knecht broke an 8-8 tie in the sixth before Max Cairo and Tubbs helped extend the lead in the seventh. Jake Hartman Jr. secured the win on the mound.

How it Happened 
  • Carthage took a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a double by Christian Duarte and a two-RBI single from Evan Devine.
  • Augustana (Ill.) responded in the fourth inning, using three base hits and an error to score four runs and take a 4-2 lead.
  • Carthage answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth, as Devine's RBI single made it 4-3, followed by a two-RBI hit from Collin Callahan to reclaim a 5-4 advantage.
  • Zander Tubbs added a two-RBI single to extend the Firebirds' lead to 7-4, and Matt Felber capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 8-4.
  • In the top of the sixth, Augustana tied the game at 8-8 with a pair of two-RBI singles.
  • Felber delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-8, and Drew Knecht followed with an RBI base hit to push the lead to 10-8.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Max Cairo added an RBI single to make it 11-8, and Tubbs followed with a two-RBI double to stretch the lead to 13-8.
  • Augustana cut the deficit to 13-9 with a home run in the eighth.
  • Jake Hartman Jr. closed out the final innings on the mound, securing the win for Carthage with solid relief work.
