Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twin Bill Against Augustana

KENOSHA – On a day dedicated to celebrating head coach Augie Schmidt, the Firebirds delivered dominant performances on the mound and at the plate, securing a home doubleheader sweep of Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday at Augie Schmidt Field. The Firebirds opened the day with a commanding 10-0 victory in seven innings, highlighted by Zander Tubbs' four RBIs and Bryce Schaum's complete-game shutout. The Firebirds capped the sweep with a 6-2 win, featuring stellar pitching that allowed just one earned run and key contributions from Max Cairo and Collin Callahan, who combined for four RBIs.

How it Happened 
Game One
  • The game started as a pitching duel, with both teams holding strong for nearly three innings. 
  • The Firebirds broke through in the third when Jimmy Herget set the tone with a leadoff double. 
  • Collin Callahan followed with a clutch single to bring Hergert home. 
  • The rally continued with a single from P.J. Moser, setting the stage for Zander Tubbs, who smashed a double to left-center, bringing Moser across the plate. 
  • The Firebirds poured it on in the fourth inning, starting when Drew Knecht reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second. 
  • Carthage quickly capitalized as Evan Devine singled to bring Knecht home. 
  • Jimmy Herget followed with a single, and Max Cairo delivered a clutch hit to center field, scoring both runners. 
  • The rally continued as Moser was hit by a pitch, which set up Zander Tubbs, who smashed a three-run home run to left field. The explosive six-run inning extended the Firebirds' lead to 8-0.
  • Carthage kept the momentum going in the sixth inning.  
  • After walks by Zander Tubbs and Matt Felber, Drew Knecht singled to bring Tubbs home. 
  • AJ Gaca followed with a single of his own, extending the Firebird lead to 10-0. 
  • Bryce Schaum closed out the complete game. He fielded a grounder for the first out, followed by a forceout at first. 
  • Schaum then sealed the victory with a swinging strikeout, capping off a dominant performance. 
Game Two
  • Augustana struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Firebirds. 
  • The Firebirds quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning when Callhan led off with a double.
  • Moser followed with a single, advancing Callahan to third and setting the stage for Tubbs.
  • Tubbs delivered with a single to left-center, driving in Callahan to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • The Vikings reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1.
  • The Firebirds responded once again in their half of the inning. Herget led off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls. 
  • Cairo followed with a single to left field, driving Herget home to tie the game at 2. 
  • The Firebirds would take the lead in the third inning. Tubbs and Felber hit back-to-back singles to get things started. 
  • Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Knecht. Christian Duarte then came through with a clutch single, driving in Tubbs to give the Firebirds a 3-2 lead. 
  • An inning later, Cairo extended the lead, crushing a home run over the left field wall, making it 4-2 for Carthage. 
  • The game turned into a pitcher's duel until the Firebirds added insurance runs in the eighth inning. 
  • Devine and Herget sparked the rally with back-to-back singles. Collin Callahan then delivered in a big way, driving in both runners with a clutch two-RBI single. 
  • Jake Hartman Jr. closed the game, striking out the first batter of the ninth inning. 
  • The next hitter flew out to right field, and Hartman sealed the win by blowing a fastball past the final batter for the last out. 

High Flyers
  • Bryce Schaum improved to 6-3 on the season, pitching his fourth complete game of the season during game one, allowing no runs, only three hits, and striking out six batters.
  • Zander Tubbs had a stellar day, going two for three with a home run and four RBIs in game one. He added two more hits and another RBI in game two. 
  • Jimmy Herget was a perfect three for three with a double and two stolen bases in game one. He added two more hits in game two to go five for seven on the day. 
  • Ryan Scanlon improved to 5-1 on the season in game two, pitching five innings with six strikeouts and allowing only one earned run. Jake Pappagallo pitched three innings in relief with two strikeouts and without allowing an earned run. Jake Hartman Jr. closed out the ninth inning with three consecutive outs, including two strikeouts. 
  • Max Cairo went two for four in game two with a home run and two RBIs, bringing his total to four RBIs across both games. 
  • Collin Callahan tallied four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader.
