Firebirds Hold Off Titans for Road Victory

BLOOMINGTON - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hit the road on Saturday for an afternoon contest against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. After a strong opening quarter, the Firebirds held on to the lead the rest of the way to earn a conference win over the Titans.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • Hannah Kim got the Firebirds started with a goal (13:13) on a free position shot, which was quickly followed by a score from Shannon Heitschmidt (11:34) to give the Firebirds a 2-0 advantage.
  • Back to back goals for Piper LeFevre (8:23; 6:38) extended the lead to 4-0.
  • The Titans found the scoreboard with 5:18 to play in the opening quarter with a goal from Mia Fiandaca and cut the deficit to 4-1.
  • Bailey Koestel scored (0:50) to give the Firebirds a 5-1 lead at the end of the first.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Fiandaca found the back of the net again (10:40), cutting the Titans deficit to three goals.
  • Koestel once again answered Fiandaca's goal with another for the Firebirds (9:01). Rosie Nolan then scored (4:00) to give Carthage a 7-2 lead.
  • The Titans cut the lead down to five with a goal from Maddie Gibson (1:57).
  • LeFevre retaliated with another pair of goals (0:55; 0:20) and extended the Firebirds lead to 9-3 to end the first half.

THIRD QUARTER
  • The Titans opened the third quarter with three goals from Avery Setzler (14:09, Fiandaca (13:54), and Carleigh Fountain (11:22) to cut the Carthage lead down to three goals.
  • Another goal from Setzler (5:02) cut the deficit to 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Titans, after being down 9-3 at halftime, brought themselves back within a goal of tying the game with a score from Sadie Newton (9:12).
  • The Titans tried to find the equalizer but a pair of saves for Xochitl Delvale-Vera in the closing minutes and an insurance goal from Emma McDonald (027) secured the win for the Firebirds.

High Flyers
  • LeFevre led the team in scoring with four goals and two assists.
  • Koestel finished with two goals.
  • Sydney Kuyava led the squad on the defensive end with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Delvale-Vera earned the win in goal with 15 saves on the day.

Coach's Remarks

"Had a great start to the game," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "We slowed down in the second half, but Xochitl kept us in the game with some key saves. I am proud that we had a lot of people step up today!"
