Women's Lacrosse Defends Home Turf with Win Over Elmhurst

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Elmhurst Bluejays on Wednesday evening at Art Keller Field. It was another strong showing for the Firebirds, who tallied their second highest goal total of the season on the way to a win over the Bluejays.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Firebirds struck first with a free position shot by Piper LeFevre (13:24).
  • Elmhurst settled the score with a goal, and was able to gain the advantage over the Firebirds for a short period of time. 
  • Shortly after, the Firebirds scored two consecutive goals from Kaitlyn Goff (8:43) and Emma McDonald (7:23), giving the Firebirds the lead at 3-2. 
  • After a caused turnover by Hannah Kim, the Firebirds were able to gain momentum and McDonald was able to score her second goal with 5 seconds remaining in the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Carthage came out strong in the second quarter with McDonald earning her first hat trick of the season (14:21), giving the Firebirds a 5-2 advantage.
  • The Firebirds continued their scoring spree with back to back goals from Goff (12:32) and Rosie Nolan (12:09). 
  • Goff earned her second hat trick of the season (11:50) and Kim scored her first goal of the contest (10:55), giving Carthage a 9-2 lead.
  • The Firebirds continued their 9-0 run with an unassisted goal from Nolan (7:59), assisted by McDonald.
  • The Bluejays cut into the deficit with a goal, but the Firebirds quickly retaliated with Goff earning her fourth and fifth goals (5:50;1:24), McDonald earning her fourth goal of the night (5:20), and Nolan earning a hat trick (3:40).

THIRD QUARTER
  • Nolan got the Firebirds started in the second half with her fourth goal of the contest (10:08).
  • Goff scored her sixth goal of the night with three minutes remaining in the third quarter (3:46), giving the Firebirds a 16-3 lead. 

FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Firebirds found the back of the net first in the fourth quarter with a goal from McDonald (11:40), her fifth of the night.
  • LeFevre furthered Carthage's advantage with a goal (6:48), assisted by Kim. 
  • Sydney Kuyava added to the mix with a goal (4:15), her first goal of the season.
  • LeFevre earned a hat trick with a goal (2:06) from a free position attempt.
  • Carthage came out on top over the Elmhurst Bluejays with a final score of 20-3.

High Flyers
  • Goff led the way with six goals and one assist.
  • McDonald finished with five goals and an assist.
  • Nolan totaled four goals.
  • LeFevre finished with three goals and an assist.

Coach's Remarks

"We came out a little slow tonight," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "But we started winning the draws and getting possessions as the game went on. Kaitlyn [Goff] had a great game on the circle and on offense. Emma [McDonald] had some great goals and plays on offense! Great team win."
