Baseball Splits in Decatur

DECATUR – The Carthage baseball team split Friday's doubleheader at Millikin, falling 7-4 in the opener before bouncing back with a 7-0 shutout in game two at Workman Family Baseball Field.

In game one, Collin Callahan's three-run homer and an RBI single from Drew Knecht pulled the Firebirds within two, but Millikin capitalized on Carthage errors to hold on.

The Firebirds responded in game two as Ryan Scanlon fired a complete-game shutout, and Carthage used a five-run surge across the fifth and seventh innings to secure the win.

How it Happened 
Game One
  • Millikin jumped out to a five-run lead in the second, using an RBI single and a two-run double, aided by a pair of Carthage errors.
  • Callahan responded with a three-run homer in the third to pull Carthage within two.
  • After Millikin plated another run in the fourth, Knecht singled in Zander Tubbs to make it 6-4 in the fifth.
  • The Big Blue added their final run in the bottom of the fifth on a Firebirds error.
  • Carthage's bullpen held Millikin scoreless over the last three frames, but the Firebirds were unable to rally late.
Game Two 
  • Callahan's two-RBI triple in the fifth got Carthage on the board before he scored on a wild pitch.
  • In the seventh, P.J. Moser added an RBI single and Tubbs followed with a two-run double.
  • Another wild pitch brought home the final run.
  • Ryan Scanlon struck out four and walked none in his complete-game shutout. 
High Flyers
  • Max Cairo and Drew Knecht each had two hits in game one while Collin Callahan went four-for-four with a triple and two runs batted in during game two. 
  • On the mound, Ryan Scanlon struck out eight during the second game only allowing five hits and no earned runs.
