Firebirds Hold Off Elmhurst 10-6 in Back-and-Forth Battle at Home

KENOSHA – Behind a fast start at the plate, the Carthage College baseball team secured a 10-6 home win over Elmhurst on Wednesday at Augie Schmidt Field. The Firebirds jumped ahead with a four-run first inning, fueled by a two-run single from Drew Knecht and a two-RBI hit from Matt Felber. Carthage kept the momentum rolling while Christian Duarte's solo homer in the seventh helped seal the win. Jake Pappagallo earned the victory on the mound, closing the game with a strikeout after a key double play in the ninth.

How it Happened 
  • Elmhurst jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a triple to right field, scoring a runner from second.
  • Carthage responded as Matt Felber drove in two with a base hit, and Drew Knecht added another two-run single to give the Firebirds a 4-1 lead.
  • The home team continued the momentum in the second inning as Max Cairo lined a single to center, and P.J. Moser followed with an RBI double. 
  • Later in the inning, Drew Knecht drove in his second run of the game to extend the lead to 7-1.
  • Wyatt Modory settled in on the mound, racking six strikeouts by the 4th inning.
  • In the fourth, Christian Duarte reached on a hit, and an Elmhurst error helped load the bases, adding another run to make it 8-1.
  • Elmhurst chipped away to make it 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Duarte responded with a solo home run to push the lead to 9-6.
  • Collin Callahan sparked the offense with a triple to right field. Cairo followed, driving in Callahan. 
  • Carthage turned a double play in the ninth—Callahan to Moser—then Jake Hartman Jr. ended the game with a strikeout to lock up the 10-6 win.
