Women's Lacrosse Celebrates Senior Day with 21-2 Win Over Augustana

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Augustana (Ill.) Vikings on Saturday afternoon at Art Keller Field. It was a special day for the Firebirds, as the team celebrated Senior Day and recognized Sydney Kuyava, Emma McDonald, and Kailey Wagner. The Firebirds then proceeded to put on an offensive showcase, registering 21 goals on the way to victory over the Vikings.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Firebirds struck first with a goal from Sofia Winterkorn (12:37). Piper LeFevre followed suit with a goal (9:34), which was assisted by Emma McDonald. 
  • The Vikings lessened the deficit with a goal, before Carthage quickly retaliated with a goal from Rosie Nolan (8:28) that was assisted by Shannon Heitschmidt, giving the Firebirds a two point advantage once again. 
  • Lefevre (6:49), Heitschmidt (6:14), and Kaitlyn Goff (4:21) scored three consecutive goals to give Carthage a 6-1 lead.
  • Lefevre earned a hat trick with less than three minutes remaining in the first quarter, assisted by Heitschmidt to give Carthage a 7-1 lead to end the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
  • The Firebirds were the first to find the back of the net in the second quarter with an unassisted goal from August Claridge (14:05). Following shortly after, Goff scored her second goal of the contest (13:06) to boost the lead to 9-1 for the Firebirds.
  • Taylor Ruff (12:19) and Nolan (11:11) followed suit with two goals to give Carthage an 11-1 lead and enforce the running clock rule.
  • Heitschmidt earned her second goal of the contest (10:15), giving Carthage a 12-1 lead, and then assisted Nolan in getting her third goal of the game for a hat trick (8:19).
  • The Vikings stopped Carthage's 11-0 run with a goal with four minutes remaining in the half, but the Firebirds quickly responded with a goal by McDonald (2:44), assisted by Lefevre. 
  • After a free position attempt, Hannah Kim earned her first goal of the contest (1:18).
  • Kaitlyn Goff earned a hat trick (0:08) at the end of the quarter, giving the Firebirds a 16-2 lead going into the second half. 

THIRD QUARTER
  • To start the second half, Karlie Young scored her first goal of the game (10:49), and the third goal of her college career. 
  • McDonald scored her second goal (8:32) of the contest from a free position attempt, giving Carthage a 16-point advantage over the Vikings.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Carthage started off the fourth quarter with Heitschmidt earning a hat trick (12:04), assisted by Winterkorn.
  • LeFevre (9:51) and Heitschmidt (4:50) each scored their fourth goals of the contest. 
  • Carthage claimed their ninth win of the season with a score of 21-2.

High Flyers
  • Heitschmidt led the way with four goals and three assists for the Firebirds.
  • LeFevre finished with four goals and two assists. 
  • Nolan and Goff each finished with three goals and an assist. 
  • Kara Jaynes earned the win in goal with 10 saves.

"Really proud of the team win today!" said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "Such a great way to celebrate our seniors!"
