Powerful Hitting Propels Firebirds to Doubleheader Sweep of North Park

KENOSHA – Behind strong pitching performances on the mound and clutch hitting, the Carthage College baseball team swept a home doubleheader against North Park on Saturday at Augie Schmidt Field. The Firebirds opened the day with a 5-1 victory, fueled by three home runs and a complete game by Bryce Schaum, before capping the sweep off with a 14-4 win (eight innings), in which Zander Tubbs, Matt Felber, and Drew Knecht combined for ten RBIs.

Game One

How it Happened 
Game One
  • Collin Callahan got the Firebirds off to a strong start, smashing a home run to left field in the team's very first at-bat of the game. 
  • The game evolved into a pitcher's duel until the 6th inning with just six combined hits when North Park managed to tie the game on a failed pickoff attempt by Carthage. 
  • Zander Tubbs broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh with a clutch solo home run to left-center field. 
  • Tubbs extended the Firebirds' lead in the bottom of the eighth inning with a double to left field, driving in P.J. Moser, who had reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A few pitches later, Drew Knecht crushed a home run, stretching the lead to 5-1. 
  • Bryce Schaum finished off the complete game by striking out the second batter. North Park then flew out to center field. The final at-bat saw a diving catch out in left field to seal the game. 
Game Two
  • The Firebirds came out swinging, putting up five runs in the first inning. Collin Callahanset set the tone with a leadoff single.  Max Cairo and P.J. Moser walked to load the bases. Christian Duarte then drove in the first run with an RBI single. Moments later, Matt Felber smashed a double off the left-center wall, bringing in two runs. Zander Tubbs added to the rally with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Duarte. Drew Knecht capped off the explosive inning with an RBI single, giving Carthage an early 5-0 lead.
  • The scoring continued in the second inning as Cairo reached on a throwing error, and Moser singled, putting runners on the corners. Felber then singled, driving in the first Carthage run of the inning. Then Zander Tubbs capped over the rally with a powerful three-run home run over the left field wall, extending the lead to 9-0.
  • North Park finally broke through in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to cut the lead to 9-4. 
  • Knecht extended the Carthage lead in the seventh inning, crushing a two-run home run over the left-field wall. 
  • In the eighth inning, Zander Tubbs doubled, Drew Knecht walked, and Chuckie Smith advanced both runners with a single before Evan Devine delivered an RBI single to add another run. Collin Callahan walked and drove in another run. Max Cairo ended the game with a sacrifice fly, giving Carthage the 14-4 win in eight innings. 
 
High Flyers
  • Bryce Schaum improved to 5-2 on the season, pitching a complete game in game one, allowing no earned runs, only four hits, and striking out eight batters. 
  • Zander Tubbs, Drew Knecht, and Collin Callahan all had a home run in the first game. 
  • Zander Tubbs delivered an outstanding performance with six hits, six RBIs, and two home runs on the day. Tubbs went a perfect four for four in game two of the day. 
  • Drew Knecht tallied three hits, five RBIs, and two home runs.
  • Collin Callahan recorded three hits with a home run in game one. 
  • Ryan Scanlon improved to 3-1 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings while striking out four batters in game two. Kosta Kokos appeared in relief, pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a run. Jake Pappagalla appeared in relief, pitching one scoreless inning.
