Women's Lacrosse Improves to Historic 5-0 with Win Over MSOE

MILWAUKEE - The Carthage women's lacrosse team traveled to Milwaukee, Wis. on Wednesday evening to take on the MSOE Raiders. The Firebirds built a big lead early in the game and used it to earn their fifth straight victory to open the 2025 campaign. The 5-0 start for Head Coach Maddie Berni and the Firebirds marks the best start in program history, surpassing the 2018 season when Carthage opened with a 4-0 record under Head Coach Lauren Hein.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • Piper LeFevre got the scoring started for the Firebirds in the opening minute of the game (14:11).
  • August Claridge (12:44) and Bailey Koestel (12:01) added on to the scoring to boost the Firebirds out to a 3-0 lead.
  • LeFevre registered another goal (10:10) before Rosie Nolan scored a short-handed goal to give the Firebirds a 5-0 lead to end the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
  • LeFevre completed the hat trick with a third goal on the night in the opening minute of the second quarter (14:07). Kyleigh Higgins scored just over a minute later (13:02) to give Carthage a 7-0 advantage.
  • Back-to-back goals from Claridge (10:21, 9:21 (free position)) extended the lead to 9-0.
  • Bailey Koestel found the back of the net with 6:15 to play, boosting the lead to double digits and enforcing the running clock rule.
  • Claridge registered two more goals (3:20, 0:52) to extend the Firebirds lead to 12-0 to end the first half.

THIRD QUARTER
  • LeFevre once again started the offense for the Firebirds with a goal at 13:17.
  • Karlie Young recorded a goal with 4:48 to play in the quarter. It was Young's first career goal with the Firebirds.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • LeFevre earned the monopoly on scoring the first goal of the quarter, finding the back of the net with 10:45 to play to extend the Carthage lead to 15-0.
  • Claridge scored the final goal of the night with 49 seconds left in the game.

High Flyers
  • Claridge, the reigning CCIW Women's Lacrosse Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week, led the Firebirds with six goals and two assists in the contest, while also tallying seven ground balls.
  • LeFevre registered five goals and two ground balls.
  • Koestel scored a pair of goals.

Coach's Remarks

"Definitely had to battle the elements but really proud of how we played," expressed Berni. "Had a lot of great moments!"
