Women's Lacrosse Improves to 6-0 with Neutral Site Win Over Emerson

GEORGETOWN - The Carthage women's lacrosse team traveled to Texas for the week to compete against a pair of teams over spring break. The Firebirds first game of the week came on Wednesday afternoon as Carthage faced off against the Emerson Lions. It was a battle of two undefeated teams as the Firebirds came into the game with a record of 5-0 and the Lions held a 3-0 record before the contest. It was a close game for the first three quarters, before the Firebirds offense took charge and pulled away for a convincing victory.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Firebirds offense got to work quickly with a pair of goals from Shannon Heitschmidt (14:19) and August Claridge (13:22).
  • The Lions found the scoreboard with an advantage goal from Callie Krosin (8:02). However, the Firebirds responded right back with a free position goal from Kyleigh Higgins (4:42) to give the Firebirds a 3-1 lead.
  • The Lions scored on a free position goal from Ava Selby (4:08) to cut the deficit to one goal.
  • A 3-0 run by the Firebirds, powered by two goals from Claridge (3:13; 2:36) and a goal from Rosie Nolan (2:20) boosted Carthage out to a 6-2 lead.
  • A goal for the Lions from Stella Huberlie (1:48) and a goal for the Firebirds by Nolan (0:28) would end the quarter with Carthage holding a 7-3 lead.

SECOND QUARTER
  • Both offenses skidded to a halt in the second quarter, with the only goal in the period coming from Emerson's Ava Dellicompagni (8:15).
  • The Firebirds entered halftime with a 7-4 lead.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Emerson's Laura Lovell got the scoring started in the third quarter (10:54), and the goal was followed by another advantage score from Callie Krosin (8:21) to bring the Carthage lead down to 7-6.
  • Piper LeFevre ended the Firebirds' scoring drought with a goal (6:45) before Nolan found the back of the net (5:06) to extend the lead back to three goals.
  • The Lions responded with goals from Krosin (4:46) and Laina Gustafson (4:09) to bring the deficit back to one.
  • The Firebirds ended the quarter with a 3-0 run from LeFevre (2:24), Heitschmidt (1:57), and Claridge (1:27) to boost the lead to 12-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Higgins started the scoring for the Firebirds (14:08) in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to five.
  • Dellicompagni scored the lone goal (12:21) for the Lions in the fourth quarter.
  • The Firebirds went on a 6-0 run to end the game with goals from Bailey Koestel (7:25), Heitschmidt (6:12; 4:37, 0:06), Claridge (5:15), and Kaitlyn Goff (2:58).

High Flyers
  • Claridge finished with five goals, one assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
  • Heitschmidt finished with five goals, one caused turnover, and one ground ball.
  • Nolan finished with three goals, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Kara Jaynes finished with 11 saves in goal for the firebirds.

Coach's Remarks

"Great start to the trip," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "[We] had some trouble with the draw in the beginning but fought our way back. Kara [Jaynes] was great in goal for us today with 11 saves. Proud of everyone and how they played!"
