Women's Lacrosse Bests Calvin in Saturday Showdown

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's lacrosse team hosted the Calvin Knights at Art Keller Field on Saturday afternoon. After a strong start on the offensive end for the Knights, the Firebirds rallied to claim the team's eighth victory of the season.

How it Happened

FIRST QUARTER
  • The Firebirds were the first to find the back of the net with an unassisted goal from Piper LeFevre (13:07). 
  • The Knights gained the momentum with four unanswered goals and pushed ahead, making the score 4-1. 
  • August Claridge quickly responded and cut into the deficit with back to back goals (0:55, 0:12) to end the first quarter with the score favoring the Knights 4-3.

SECOND QUARTER
  • The Knight's lead was taken away after a goal from LeFevre (12:34) that was assisted by Shannon Heitschmidt. 
  • Calvin pushed ahead with a goal, but the Firebirds countered it with a goal from Bailey Koestel (4:18). 
  • After a save by Xochitl Delvale-Vera, the Firebirds flipped the momentum with a goal from Koestel (0:18), with the assist coming from Kaitlyn Goff in order to give Carthage 6-5 lead at halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER
  • Claridge got the scoring started and earned a hat trick (12:23) which gave the Firebirds a two-goal advantage. Claridge's goal sparked a 4-0 run for Carthage, with goals coming from LeFevre (9:06), Emma McDonald (8:40) and Koestel (7:39).
  • With three minutes remaining in the quarter, the Knights were able to cut into the deficit with back to back goals.
  • The Firebirds entered the fourth quarter with a 10-7 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Knights lessened the deficit with a goal to start the fourth quarter, before LeFevre retaliated with her fourth goal (11:56) of the contest. 
  • Koestel followed suit and scored her fourth goal (10:23) with the help of LeFevre, giving the Firebirds a four-goal lead at 12-8. 
  • The Firebirds furthered their advantage with another goal from LeFevre (7:50), assisted by Shannon Heitschmidt. 
  • With two minutes remaining, the Knights were able to dip into the Firebird's lead with a goal, but Carthage stood victorious with a final score of 13-9. 

High Flyers
  • LeFevre led the way with five goals and an assist.
  • Koestel finished with four goals and an assist.
  • Claridge finished with three goals on the day.
  • Delvale-Vera earned the win in goal with 12 saves.

Coach's Remarks

"Started off a little slow," said Head Coach Maddie Berni. "But we came back and played as a team and had a great team win! Really proud of everyone."
