Firebirds Secure Three Wins at RussMatt Invitational

WINTER HAVEN - The Carthage College baseball team added three wins during their RussMatt Invite in Florida. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final Score: Carthage 10 - Anderson (Ind.) 7
  • Location: Titusville, Florida

How it Happened 
Game One
  • The Firebirds got on the board first in the second inning when P.J. Moser launched a solo home run to left field, giving Carthage an early 1-0 lead.
  • Max Cairo extended the advantage in the third, sending a two-run home run over the left-field fence to score Drew Knecht and make it 3-0.
  • Carthage added two more in the fifth as AJ Gaca led off with a walk before Knecht laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position. 
  • Collin Callahan then tripled to right field, driving in Gaca. 
  • Cairo followed with an RBI single to left, pushing the lead to 5-0.
  • The Firebirds broke the game open in the sixth, with the bases loaded, Knecht lined an RBI single to center, bringing home Matt Felber. 
  • Callahan followed with a run-scoring single to left before Krekling worked a bases-loaded walk, plating another run to make it 8-0.
  • Anderson (Ind.) cut into the deficit with two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but Cairo put the game out of reach with his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left in the eighth.
  • The Ravens threatened in the ninth, scoring three runs, but Carthage held on to secure the 10-7 victory.
Game Two
  • Callahan drew a leadoff walk, and after a strikeout, Cairo reached on an error. Joe Zuleger then delivered an RBI single to right, bringing home Callahan for the game's first run. 
  • Another defensive mistake on a fielder's choice allowed Cairo to score, and a second error plated Zuleger, giving the Firebirds a 3-0 lead.
  • Moser extended the lead in the third, ripping a two-out RBI double to left field to bring home Cairo and make it 4-0.
  • Carthage added three more in the sixth. Knecht led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Callahan. 
  • The Firebirds then executed a double steal, with Callahan swiping second and Knecht stealing home. 
  • Krekling reached on an error later in the inning, allowing Callahan to score. 
  • Felber capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Krekling to seal the 7-0 shutout win.
Game Three
  • The Firebirds fell behind in the first inning after Dominican stole second and scored on a double to left.
  • Carthage evened the score in the third as Cairo walked, stole second and third, and came home on a two-out RBI double by Moser to make it even at one.
  • Carthage had an opportunity in the eighth after Cairo reached third on a pair of wild pitches, but the Firebirds couldn't bring him home.
  • In the ninth, Jimmy Herget drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on another Dominican (Ill.) wild pitch. 
  • With two outs, Callahan lined a walk-off single to left, bringing home Herget and sealing a 2-1 Carthage victory.
Game Four
  • Carthage struggled early as Concordia (Ill.) put up three runs in the first inning. 
  • The Cougars struck first with a two-run home run followed by a solo shot to make it 3-0.
  • Concordia (Ill.) added two more in the second on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 5-0.
  • Carthage chipped away in the fifth. Zuleger led off with a single before Knecht reached on an error. 
  • Callahan then drew a walk to load the bases. 
  • Moser came through with a two-run single to center, scoring Zuleger and Knecht. 
  • Cairo added a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Callahan and cutting the deficit to 5-3.
  • The Firebirds had a chance to close the gap further in the sixth, but a double play ended the inning.
  • Concordia (Ill.) added an insurance run in the seventh. 
  • Carthage struggled to generate offense in the final innings, managing just one baserunner the rest of the way as the Cougars closed out the 6-3 win.
High Flyers
  • Collin Callahan led the Firebirds' offense, going 6-for-13 with four RBIs, including a key walk-off hit against Dominican (Ill.). 
  • Max Cairo had a standout performance, blasting three home runs and driving in six runs across the four games.
  • P.J. Moser went 5-for-12 with a home run, two doubles, and four RBIs, while Joe Zuleger added four hits and two RBIs.
  • Drew Knecht contributed with three RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.
  • On the mound, the Carthage pitching staff dominated, with Wyatt Modory fanning four against Pitt.-Greensburg. 
  • Jake Pappagallo struck out three in 2.0 shutout frames of relief, while the Firebirds' bullpen allowed just five earned runs over the four-game stretch.
