Baseball Goes 6-2 in Arizona

TUSCON - The Carthage College baseball team returns to Wisconsin with six wins out of eight games played in Arizona. The Firebirds scored 10 or more runs in five of the games while in Tuscon.

How it Happened 

Game One
  • Linfield jumped ahead in the fourth inning, plating three runs on a pair of hits and a two-RBI double to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Carthage threatened in the fifth after Drew Knecht reached on a single down the right-field line and advanced to second on an error, but the Firebirds were unable to capitalize.
  • Linfield extended its lead in the sixth, launching a three-run home run to push the score to 6-0.
  • Linfield added another in the ninth to seal a 7-0 win.
Game Two
  • Carthage struck first in the second inning when Christian Duarte launched a solo home run to left to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Firebirds added to their advantage in the third when Kody Krekling doubled to right before Chuckie Smith singled him home to make it 2-0.
  • In the fourth, Zander Tubbs drove in Joe Zuleger with an RBI single, extending the lead to 3-0. Saint John's responded in the bottom half with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Carthage built on its lead in the fifth when Callahan scored on a throwing error, followed by a Max Cairo RBI single to make it 5-1.
  • Zuleger and Tubbs each contributed RBIs in the later innings, helping Carthage secure an 8-5 victory despite a late push from Saint John's (Minn.).
Game Three
  • Carthage jumped out early in the first when Callahan doubled and came around to score on a Wesleyan error. The Firebirds extended their lead in the third when Zuleger tripled home two runs before Felber added an RBI single, making it 4-0.
  • Wesleyan rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom half to close the gap to 4-3.
  • Carthage responded in the fourth with an RBI double from Smith to push the lead to 5-3.
  • Duarte homered in the fifth, and Tubbs added an RBI single in the eighth to give Carthage a 7-3 advantage. The Firebirds tacked on three more in the ninth before holding off Wesleyan's final push to secure a 10-5 win.
Game Four
  • Carthage jumped ahead early with two runs in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from Krekling brought home the first run and a fielding error allowed another to cross the plate. 
  • Crown responded in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on an error to bring the score to 2-1.
  • Both teams traded runs in the third and fourth innings, with Crown taking a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of RBI hits. However, Carthage answered immediately in the sixth when Callahan's RBI double and Zuleger's RBI single pushed the Firebirds back ahead 5-4.
  • The Firebirds took full control in the seventh, as pinch hitter Cairo launched a solo home run to center field. 
  • Later in the inning, Callahan and Krekling advanced on a passed ball before P.J. Moser cleared the bases with a two-run triple, extending the lead to 8-4.
  • Carthage put the game out of reach in the ninth with a five-run outburst. Callahan scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Zach Tubbs delivered the knockout blow with a grand slam, sealing the 13-4 victory.
Game Five
  • Crown (Minn.) struck first in the second inning with an RBI double to center to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Carthage responded in the third when Gaca singled to right before Smith delivered an RBI single up the middle, tying the game at 1-1.
  • The Firebirds took control in the fourth when Zuleger and Tubbs reached base with singles. 
  • Felber laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Krekling then delivered a two-run double to center, giving Carthage a 3-1 lead.
  • Crown (Minn.) answered in the fifth, capitalizing on a balk and an error to score three runs and retake the lead at 4-3.
  • The Firebirds immediately responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases before Tubbs lined a two-run single to center. 
  • Krekling followed with a sacrifice fly, extending Carthage's lead to 6-4.
  • Carthage exploded in the sixth, and Callahan led off with a home run to center. 
  • Tubbs later added a three-run shot, and a series of hits extended the lead to 19-4. The Firebirds closed it out in the seventh, securing the win.
Game Six
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took an early lead in the third, scoring two runs on a double. 
  • They extended their lead in the fourth with three more runs, including two more RBIs to make it 5-0.
  • Carthage responded in the fifth when Max Cairo doubled home Collin Callahan, followed by a P.J. Moser RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Despite a strong relief effort from the Firebirds' bullpen, the offense was unable to generate more runs, and Claremont-M-S held on for a 5-2 victory.
Game Seven
  • The Firebirds struck first in the second inning when Gaca singled through the left side. Felber followed with a single to right, advancing Gaca to second. 
  • Knecht was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gaca came home on a wild pitch to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.
  • Carthage added to its advantage in the inning when Krekling grounded out to short, allowing Felber to score and make it 2-0.
  • The Firebirds broke the game open in the third. Callahan walked and stole second before Cairo flied out to right.
  • Moser then grounded out to second, moving Callahan to third. Tubbs was hit by a pitch, and Gaca walked to load the bases. 
  • Felber came through with a two-run single to right, scoring Callahan and Tubbs to push the lead to 4-0.
  • Knecht followed with a three-run home run to left, bringing home Gaca and Felber to extend the lead to 7-0.
  • In the fourth, Smith singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Callahan walked before Cairo launched a three-run home run to left, making it 10-0.
  • Northern State responded with seven runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 10-7.
  • Carthage answered in the sixth when Tubbs doubled to left to drive in Cairo. 
  • Knecht followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Tubbs. 
  • Krekling then reached on a throwing error, allowing Felber to score. Smith capped off the rally with a two-run double down the left-field line to push the lead to 15-9.
  • Northern State made another push, scoring four in the seventh to pull within 15-13, but Carthage held firm.
  • In the ninth, Smith doubled to center before Moser added insurance with an RBI single to right. The Firebirds closed the game in the bottom of the frame, securing the 16-13 victory.
Game Eight
  • Carthage wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first. Callahan singled and advanced on a wild pitch before Tubbs and Duarte delivered RBI singles.
  • The Firebirds extended their lead in the third when Duarte doubled to bring home two more runs. Carthage added another on an RBI single from Evan Devine to make it 6-0.
  • Macalester responded with a run in the fourth on an RBI single, but Carthage took control in the sixth. 
  • Knecht led off with a single, followed by a Devine double. A wild pitch brought in one run before Cairo ripped an RBI single. 
  • Moser then launched a two-run home run to extend the lead to 11-1.
  • The Firebirds continued the offensive onslaught, with Smith tripling and Duarte adding another RBI single. Carthage plated six runs in the inning, securing a commanding 13-1 lead.
  • Jake Hartman closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning, securing a dominant 13-1 victory for Carthage.

High Flyers
  • Collin Callahan was a key contributor for Carthage with a home run, two doubles, and four RBIs. He also added two stolen base and drew multiple walks.
  • Max Cairo delivered clutch hitting, blasting two home runs and driving in seven runs over the stretch.
  • Joe Zuleger contributed with six hits and three RBIs, while Drew Knecht added five RBIs and a home run of his own.
  • On the mound, Jake Pappagallo struck out eight against Crown (Minn.) and Bryce Schaum struck out 16 against Crown (Minn.) on March 13. 
 
Up Next 
  • Carthage is scheduled to play Lakeland on Wednesday, March 19 at 1 p.m. in their home opener.
